My Coolest Project:
My coolest projects typically involve a client that is very passionate about their project. Fortunately, my career has provided me multiple opportunities to meet and work with these types of clients in a variety of conditions. One project included a group of clients that hired me to design their new prayer hall with support facilities. This would be their first location built in San Antonio which would allow them to leave the rented locations that they currently occupied. They explained to me that it was important to them to have a local architect design this new facility and the official logo for the location so that it would be unique and maintain the local flair of the San Antonio area. I was honored to be able to provide a design based on my research that began with concept design to the actual construction of the facility knowing that it be included with their other facilities around the world.

Architect

RICHARD DERAS, with over 28 years of experience, began his professional career almost immediately after graduating from Texas Tech University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Architecture degree. After graduation, he moved to San Antonio and started working at a local architecture firm. In the past, Richard was involved in an interior design firm that he helped develop into an architecture firm. His recent involvement at an engineering firm was to manage and develop the architecture division of the company. This responsibility included selecting and training his staff, as well as creating and developing the architecture department for the entire firm.

Throughout Richard’s career, he has been involved in a wide variety of projects across several states ranging from master planning, commercial, religious, health care, institutional, residential, interior design, and government. The scale of these projects have varied from 1,000 square feet to well over 140,000 square feet. His involvement in these projects include the entire span of architectural services from preliminary concepts, schematic design, design development, specifications, construction documents, and construction management. Richard understands that developing a good working relationship with the client, the design team, and the contractors are crucial to providing the client with a successful project.

In addition to architecture projects, Richard’s experience includes the involvement in conducting Facility Condition Assessments (FCA’s) and Property Condition Assessments (PCA’s) for government and institution clients. These assessments utilize the professional consultants’ experience to explain the current conditions and their campus, buildings and/or structures, identify any items of concern, and provide an analysis of the future lifecycle. This allows the client to develop a maintenance or replacement schedule and budget for their facility and/or campus. Some of these clients assessed by Richard include the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs hospital campuses across the United States and the local University of Texas at San Antonio.
